Vestingdriehoek Vestingdriehoek

The Vestingdriehoek is formed by the fortress towns Vesting Gorinchem en Vesting Woudrichem, Slot Loevestein and Fort Vuren. They are connected by a ferry service for pedestrians and cyclists, and many walking and cycling routes have their starting point in the Vestingdriehoek.

Slot Loevestein

Slot Loevestein lies in the heart of the typical Dutch river landscape of Munnikenland, where the rivers Meuse and Waal are merged. The old castle is a wonderful attraction for young and old. In the museum castle, the outer fort and the soldiers’ village there is lots to be discovered. You will be going back to the time of the soldiers and knights, learning about Hugo de Groot, the Middle Ages and the Dutch Waterline. You can reach Slot Loevestein from Gorinchem using the pedestrians and cyclists’ ferry.

Vesting Woudrichem

In Vesting Woudrichem you can take a tour back in time. The Martinuskerk right at the center of the fortified town is certainly worth a visit, and you can have a wonderful dinner at the Prisoner’s Gate – a monumental gate in which prisoners awaited their sentences back in the nineteenth century. During the Fishery Days festival that is held once every three years, Woudrichem gets transformed back into the old fisherman’s town it once was.

Vesting Gorinchem

Vesting Gorinchem is a real sight, with its protective walls, impressive cannons and even windmills. But above all, its town centre is intimate and has inviting terraces at the Oude Markt. Its surroundings are perfect for nice walks or cycle tours. Using the ferry, you can visit the whole of the Vestingdriehoek in one trip.

Fort Vuren

Fort Vuren is a very special Bed and Breakfast with a range of options to spend the night; from a simple room for cyclists and hikers to roll out their sleeping bag to beautiful rooms with all conveniences you could wish for. Adventurous types may even prefer to use the bunker which has been transformed into a guesthouse, accomodating up to four people. You can attend one of the frequently held cultural events at the site. The river ferry and water taxi connect Fort Vuren to Slot Loevestein, Vesting Woudrichem and Vesting Gorinchem.
