Island of Schalkwijk
The Island of Schalkwijk is a special area located South of the city of Utrecht. Between the Amsterdam Rhine canal and the river Lek lies a majestic, open landscape with three New Dutch Waterline forts.
Lunet aan de Snel
The small fort near the inundation channel at Honswijk houses an educational centre called Waterfort. Visitors here can learn about the theme of water. The interactive centre provides many examples of the use of water: as a means of defence, as a threat that we have to protect ourselves against, the use of water in agriculture and food production and last but not least, the importance of drinking water. Visitors can conduct experiments and children can play with water.
Werk aan de Korte Uitweg
This small defence work South of Schalkwijk is an ideal place to relax after a nice walk or bicycle tour. Visit the atmospheric tea house for a drink and a bite to eat. There is a natural camping ground that goes all around the fort. In the fort, one can also book rooms that are suitable for parties and business meetings.
Fort Honswijk
Fort Honswijk, south of the city of Houten on the river Lek, frequently opens its gates for guided tours and public events. The fort is momentarily being redeveloped and will show more and more of its secrets in the near future. The gun tower, used by many hundreds of bats to spend their winter, is very characteristic to this fort.
