Fort Everdingen and Werk aan het Spoel

South of the river Lek, near Culemborg, lie both Fort Everdingen and Werk aan het Spoel. From April until the end of September, these forts are directly connected to the forts on the island of Schalkwijk by the Waterline ferry.

Fort Everdingen

Brewery Duits & Lauret crafts the tastiest beers in the combat engineers’ barracks. The brewers serve their beers accompanied by snacks in the brewery itself and on the terrace. There are frequent beer tasting events as well. A small campsite can be found at the Fort’s terrain, with a specific area reserved for camper vans.

Werk aan het Spoel

The architectural design of Fort Werk aan het Spoel is a sight to behold. This is a cultural meeting place on the river Lek, with an attractive cafe and sunny terrace. Artists show their creations in the former guarding officer’s home, which is now an atelier for artists in residence. The amphitheatre frequently hosts various cultural activities. A multitude of cycling routes and walks cross paths here, near the jetty of the Waterline ferry. Enjoy a wonderful cup of coffee or a tasty lunch in restaurant Caatje aan de Lek.
